2026–2027 U.S. College Admissions Update: More Colleges Are Dropping Supplemental Essays

One noticeable trend in the 2026–2027 application cycle is that several U.S. colleges are simplifying or even eliminating supplemental essay requirements.

For students, this may sound like good news: fewer “Why This School?” or short-answer essays to write. But fewer essays do NOT necessarily mean an easier application process. Instead, this shift signals students need to clearly communicate their direction, priorities, and in-depth commitment throughout their applications.

Universities That Have Removed or Do Not Require Standard Supplemental Essays

UNC Chapel Hill

UNC has removed the two short-answer questions from its application supplement for the 2026–2027 application cycle.

University of Georgia

For Fall 2027 applicants, UGA no longer requires a UGA-specific supplemental essay. Students only need to submit the Common App personal essay.

University of Virginia

UVA has largely eliminated supplemental essays for most undergraduate applicants. However, the School of Nursing still requires an additional written response.

Rutgers University–New Brunswick

Rutgers does not require supplemental essays for Common App applicants. Students applying to the Honors College or honors programs may still need to submit an additional short statement.

Tulane University

Tulane has removed its well-known “Why Tulane?” essay. This is a meaningful change because Tulane has historically placed strong emphasis on demonstrated interest and school fit.

University of Miami

The University of Miami has removed the supplemental essay from its undergraduate application process.

Northeastern University

Northeastern does not require a standard school-specific supplemental essay for general undergraduate applicants. Some arts, design, or portfolio-based programs may still require additional materials.

Case Western Reserve University

Case Western does not require a standard supplemental essay for general applicants. However, students applying for certain scholarships, arts programs, or special opportunities may have additional requirements.

Liberal Arts Colleges With No Required Supplemental Essay or Only Optional Supplements

Middlebury College

Middlebury does not require a supplemental essay.

Grinnell College

Grinnell does not require an application supplement.

Vassar College

Vassar does not require a supplemental essay, but students may submit the optional “Your Space” supplement.

Colgate University

Colgate does not require a supplemental essay, though it may offer optional writing prompts.

Washington and Lee University

Washington and Lee does not require a supplemental essay, but students may choose to submit optional short-answer responses, including a “Why W&L?” response.

Bowdoin College

Bowdoin’s supplemental essay is optional rather than required.

Colleges That Cut Supplemental Essays

Yale University

Yale removed its traditional "Why Yale" essay this application season.

Washington University, St. Luis

WashU removed one optional essay.

University of Georgia

Eliminated its only UGA-specific essay.

What This Means for Applicants

The decline of supplemental essays does not mean colleges have less information to evaluate. It signals the remaining parts of the application matter even more.

Students should pay closer attention to:

1. Does your personal statement create a distinctive sense of who you are?

2. Is the intended major choice thoughtful and well-aligned with the student’s profile?

3. Does the rigor of your coursework support your academic direction and intended field of study?

4. Is the early application strategy clear and purposeful?

5. Can you show in your application that you would be a strong fit for your target college's community?

   
   

The key to a successful application process is not simply to apply to more schools because the writing load is lighter. It is to build a stronger, more coherent narrative before senior year begins.
